Solider gets honourable discharge 35 years after being kicked out of US Army for being gay
A soldier has been given an honourable discharge thirty five years after being kicked out of the army for being a lesbian.
Lisa Weiszmiller, 53, was previously given an “other than honourable” discharge, after being kicked out of the army in 1979.
Now she has been issued a backdated “honourable” discharge certificate.
“Back then, the treatment was barbaric,” Weiszmiller has said, stating her intention to get the US Veterans Affairs Department to pay for a post-traumatic stress disorder service disability.
She says that she suffers from PTSD not because of active service, but because of the way she was treated, saying that she and another gay soldier were given extra duties, as well as being verbally abused.
She has since worked as a nurse, and battled drug addiction.
