First civil union takes place in Malta
The first ever civil union has been registered in Malta, since parliament voted to introduce the new law earlier this year.
Back in April, the Parliament of Malta voted to allow same-sex couples to enter civil unions and adopt children and amended its constitution to forbid discrimination against transgender people.
Kristina Galea Cavallazzi and Clara Borg registered their union on Friday.
The couple vowed to care for one another, and for mutual respect, as family and friends looked on, reports the Malta Independent.
The new law was signed in mid-April by President Marie Lousie Coleiro Preca, and legal notices were published more recently.
The Civil Unions Act will also ensure that same-sex couples married or in a partnership from another country will see their union recognised in Malta.
