US: White House officials to meet with gay rights activists
Just days after President Barack Obama agreed to sign an executive order barring anti-LGBT discrimination by federal contractors, White House officials are to meet with gay rights activists.
The officials and activists will meet on Thursday to discuss implementing the plans for prohibiting workplace discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.
The focus will be on the aftermath of last year’s Supreme Court ruling to strike down the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
The US Department of Justice is also expected to release a report on its progress in enforcing benefits for gay people, Politico reports.
Obama has been under pressure to sign an Executive Order due to the stalling of the broader Employment Non-Discrimination Act in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
