US: Texas Governor stands by comments comparing homosexuality to alcoholism
The Governor of Texas has stood by comments he made comparing homosexuality to alcoholism, saying the comments “stand on their own.”
Perry arose controversy last week, when he made the comparison at an event in San Fransicso.
He had said: “Whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not, you have the ability to decide not to do that.
“I may have the genetic coding that I’m inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that, and I look at the homosexual issue the same way.”
Now speaking to CNN, Perry reiterated his stance on homosexuality, saying: “I think my position has been fairly clear on that for a substantial period of time.
“I think the social issues should be decided state-by-state rather than being something in Washington, D.C., to try to make one-size-fits-all.”
On the comparison to alcoholism, he said: “I got asked a question and I responded the way that I have before… I think my comments stand on their own. I can’t help you understand it.”
He had previously received admonishment from New Jersey governor Chris Christie and newly-out actress Ellen Page
