Dominican Cardinal: Gay US ambassador should ‘take his pride elsewhere’
A Catholic cardinal in the Dominican Republic has attacked the country’s openly gay US ambassador, telling him to “take his pride elsewhere”.
Wally Brewster, who was appointed ambassador to the Dominican Republic last year, is one of six gay US ambassadors around the world.
Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodríguez, who previously referred to Brewster as a maricón (faggot), has attacked him again for a video featuring him with his husband.
He said: “Diplomacy is not for that sort of thing, an absolutely negative propaganda.
“I am totally against that, everybody knows it, my position is not new, not because this man with this kind of attitude has now arrived.
“He should take his pride elsewhere.”
In the video, Brewster and his husband celebrated Pride month, saying: “June is LGBT Pride month around the world, and we are proud to celebrate with millions of LGBT individuals, along with democratic governments, and citizens of many cities and countries throughout the world celebrating life, diversity, inclusion, compassion and equality.”
James Homel became the first gay US ambassador, when he was appointed by Bill Clinton as Ambassador to Luxembourg in 1999.
