Bill proposed to deny US entry to LGBT rights violators
A bill has been introduced which would block LGBT rights violators from entering the US.
Gay Democratic Congressman David Cicilline has introduced The Global Respect Act, which asks for the protection of “the basic human rights of the international LGBT community” from the US State Department through the denial of US visas to human rights violators.
Cicilline said: “The Global Respect Act will protect the rights of the LGBT community across the globe and uphold America’s commitment to defending basic human rights in all corners of the world.”
David Stacy, the Human Rights Campaign’s Government Affairs Director said: “This bill sends a clear message to those who have championed these serious human rights violations that the United States government and the American people fundamentally reject them.”
The bill was presented to the House of Representatives in the lead up to the first LGBT Human Rights Forum hosted by the White House yesterday. Vice President Joe Biden reiterated the importance of international LGBT rights saying they take precedence over social and cultural tradition.
