Mayor of Tower Hamlets condemns homophobic attack on gay couple
A homophobic attack on a gay couple in east London has been condemned by the Mayor of Tower Hamlets.
Walter Adrian and his boyfriend were violently assaulted outside a bank in Whitechapel after leaving a friend’s party just before midnight on 13 June.
The east London Advertiser reports in a statement Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “I wholeheartedly condemn the homophobic attacks that took place in Whitechapel on 13 June.
“Everyone has the right to walk our streets safely without fear of attack.
“I note reports that arrests have been made and encourage anyone with any additional information to contact the police.”
Two males, both aged 16, arrested in connection with the assault have been bailed until 4 July.
A Tower Hamlets Council spokesman said police confirmed the case would be referred to the Tower Hamlets Hate Incident Panel for a review.
He added: “There is no place for hate in Tower Hamlets and we take a zero-tolerance approach to homophobia.
“Across all religions, partner organisations and community groups there is unanimity in the belief that by working together we can build a strong and cohesive community.”
