Sam Smith: If you want to be equal, don’t make your sexuality an issue
Singer Sam Smith has advised people not to make their sexuality “an issue” if they want to be treated normally.
The singer, who revealed last month that his album was written about a man he had fallen in love with, told the Jim & Kate Morning Show that people need to “act” equal if they want equal rights.
He said: “I would say just be yourself. Don’t make it an issue. Let’s make it a normality.
“To make it equal, we need to act equal. Everyone just needs to focus on themselves as individuals and do what makes them happy, and be brave.”
He joked: “Listen to my record, it might help you.”
Earlier this month, Adam Lambert said that Smith was “struggling” with attention after his coming out.
He said: “Sam] told me he has never had an issue about his sexuality until now because everyone is making such a big deal about it which is crazy.
“Sam is going through that process of having his sexuality dissected and talked about.
“It’s hard because even though things have changed a lot since I came out it’s still a drama or talking point.”
Smith’s debut album, In The Lonely Hour, debuted at number two on the US singles charts last week, the highest debut placing for a UK male artist ever.
The singer had first ignited rumours in May, when the music video for his track ‘Leave Your Lover’ showed him at the centre of a gay love triangle.
