US: Judge to delay decision on recovery of legal fees in Wisconsin same-sex marriage case
A federal judge has decided to delay a decision about gay and lesbian plaintiffs’ legal fees.
Both sides in the Wisconsin case requested last week that District Judge Barbara Crabb hold off on deciding whether the same-sex couples who brought the case were entitled to recover attorneys’ fees.
A joint filing from those for and against same-sex marriage in Wisconsin asked for Judge Crabb to wait until after the appeals in the case are finished.
It said it would make more sense to wait, than to require payment to attorneys so soon after the ruling.
US District Judge Barbara Crabb struck down the state’s same-sex marriage ban on Friday 6 June, leading to some counties issuing marriage licences immediately.
However, after Attorney General JB Van Hollen appealed, on Friday 13 June Crabb last Friday agreed to halt her ruling, stopping all new marriages until the appeal concludes.
