Anti-homophobia Tory Hugh Robertson resigns as Foreign Office Minister in Government reshuffle
A vocal opponent of homophobia in sport MP Hugh Robertson, has resigned as a Foreign Office minister in tonight’s Government reshuffle.
Mr Robertson, the MP for Faversham and Mid Kent, and former Sports Minister, last year urged professional football clubs to do more to tackle homophobia in sport.
He strongly advised clubs to take on the Football v Homophobia initiative, saying: “Discrimination of any kind must be stamped out. I want to see the football authorities increase their efforts to tackle homophobia.
“I was encouraged that their joint anti-discrimination strategy, published in December [2012], includes action in this area as more needs to be done.”
Mr Robertson was named on the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, as it was first published, and it was initially announced that he would take the legislation through the House of Commons.
