Anti-gay marriage Tory Nicky Morgan promoted, stays minister ‘for women and equalities’ in reshuffle
Nicky Morgan, a Tory MP who voted against same-sex marriage, has been promoted to education secretary, and “continues as minister for women and equalities”.
In a government reshuffle in April, sparked by the resignation of Maria Miller, Ms Morgan, MP for Loughborough, was appointed Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Minister for Women, and did not carry ‘equalities’ in her title.
But, on announcing changes in today’s reshuffle, the Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted that Ms Morgan would be promoted to Education Secretary and “continues as Minister for Women and Equalities.”
A Downing Street spokesperson confirmed to PinkNews Ms Morgan’s appointment as Minister for both women and equalities.
The spokesperson also told PinkNews that the equalities brief would be moved to the Department for Education.
Noting that same-sex marriage legislation is already in place, and there is no challenge to have it reversed, they said Ms Morgan would be working on issues such as tackling homophobic bullying in schools.
Ms Morgan, elected to Parliament in 2010, voted against the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act at second and third reading last year, stating that “marriage is between a man and a woman.”
