Britain’s Got Talent winner: ‘I’m openly gay, but no-one asked’
One of the winners of this year’s Britain’s Got Talent has opened up about his sexuality, saying that he is openly gay but “no-one asked” during his time on the show.
Tyneside singer Jamie Lambert, 22, is one-fifth of theatre vocal group Collabro, which won the final of Britain’s Got Talent in June with a rendition of ‘Stars’, from hit musical Les Miserables.
He told The Sun that he had “nothing to hide” about his sexuality and that the rest of Collabro know that he is gay, but that it’s “only an aspect” of who he is.
“No-one asked,” he said. “I have nothing to hide from anybody. I think it’s really important that all gay people in the public eye just talk about it. The more that happens, the more normal it becomes.
“I remember when Stephen Gately from Boyzone came out and it was a really massive deal. But I think nowadays it’s about being comfortable in your own skin and comfortable with who you fall in love with. It doesn’t make a difference whether it’s with a man or a woman.”
He added: “It’s not all of who I am. I would hate for people to see me as ‘the gay one’, rather than the one who sings that line.”
This year’s series of Britain’s Got Talent, shown on ITV, also featured drag artist La Voix and the London Gay Big Band, who went on to perform at London Pride last month.
