Guyana: Two stabbed to death by ‘jilted lover’
Two people from the LGBT community were stabbed to death in Guyana in the early hours of yesterday morning.
According to the Jamaica Observer, the two were murdered in the former British colony’s capital Georgetown, allegedly by the spurned lover of a sex worker.
The murderer had reportedly thrown gasoline over his former lover, attempting to set them alight outside St George’s Cathedral in the town. After being driven away, he had murdered the pair.
Initial reports suggest that the victims identified as male and were sex workers, but we are unable to confirm their gender identity.
They are named in local press as Jason John and Carl Sinclair.
The two victims were murdered less than a block apart, with one body discovered on Leopold Street, and another on Lombard Street.
Homosexuality is still illegal in Guyana under sodomy laws dating back to its past as a British colony.
It is one of 42 Commonwealth countries to criminalise homosexuality, out of a total of 53.
Section 352 of the Criminal Law act states: “Any male person who, in public or private, commits, or is a party to the commission, or procures or attempts to procure the commission, by any male person, of any act of gross indecency with any other male person shall be guilty of a misdemeanour and liable to imprisonment for two years.”
