US: Anti-gay Republican wins GOP primary in Georgia
Republican Jody Hice, a pastor who once claimed that gay people have a secret plot to sodomise America’s sons, won the Georgia 10th district GOP primary last night.
The Tea Party candidate’s win means he is officially a nominee for a seat in Congress.
It is likely he will win the seat against a Democratic nominee in the largely conservative state of Georgia.
Hice has said that being gay is a choice based on “tendencies.”
Hice is also a supporter of “ex-gay therapy,” saying that banning it would enslave and entrap “potentially hundreds of thousands of individuals in a lifestyle that in reality they are not.”
Hice is the author of the self-published book, It’s Now or Never: A Call to Reclaim America.
In the 2012 book, Hice cites a 1987 column by Michael Swift, a gay writer, to suggest that gay people sexually abuse children as part of an agenda.
The quote says: “We shall sodomize your sons, emblems of your feeble masculinity, of your shallow dreams and vulgar lies.
“We shall seduce them in your schools, in your dormitories, in your gymnasiums, in your locker rooms, in your sports arenas, in your seminaries, in your youth groups, in your movie theater bathrooms, in your army bunkhouses, in your truck stops, in your all male clubs, in your houses of Congress, wherever men are with men together.
“Your sons shall become our minions and do our bidding. They will be recast in our image. They will come to crave and adore us.”
Hice says of the quote: “These shocking words by Michael Swift have been considered part of the ‘gay manifesto’ by many, and reveal the radical agenda that is currently threatening our nation.”
The column, however, was entirely satirical.
