Commonwealth Games organisers: Barrowman gay kiss was scripted to promote equality
The organisers of the Commonwealth Games have revealed that John Barrowman’s surprise gay kiss in last night’s opening ceremony was planned well in advance.
The opening ceremony yesterday evening, which is estimated to have reached a global audience of several hundred million,featured a kiss between actor John Barrowman and a male dancer, in celebration of equality in Scotland.
A heterosexual couple were also seen kissing during the ceremony, during a ballet portion of the ceremony.
Organisers this morning told reporters that Barrowman’s kiss was always planned to be part of the event.
Games CEO David Grevemberg said: “That moment was about people getting married, and that was something reflected throughout. But yes, it was scripted. It’s all about love.
“In keeping with humanity, equality… also with a bit of Scottish welcoming flair to showcase a speed-date of Scotland very quickly. This was something that we felt accentuated the values of Scotland and the diversity of Scotland. It’s something we felt strongly about in showcasing everything that’s on offer.
“What we’re committed to as an organisation, we haven’t compromised yet, in terms of being – some people may say bold – but confident in our approach and again in keeping with the values of the [Commonwealth Games Federation].”
