US: Janet Mock is Marie Claire’s newest contributing editor
Janet Mock is joining the US edition of Marie Claire magazine as a contributing editor.
Marie Claire editor in chief Anne Fulenwider announced the news on Twitter earlier this week.
Mock’s first piece, according to Poynter, will appear in a fall print edition of the magazine.
Mock has written for Marie Claire in the past, publishing a piece in 2011 about life as a transgender woman.
Mock told Poynter: “I’ll give my perspective on beauty, and pop culture, and politics, and not just be thrown into a corner as the trans correspondent.”
Fulenwider told Poynter that Mock will be writing about being a transgender woman, but won’t be limited to that topic.
Fulenwider said: “I’m certainly not discounting her transgender identity; I think that’s really important and that’s what makes [her hiring] so topical right now and what’s given [the announcement] a lot of attention, but at the center of this is the story of a woman finding herself, and those are the stories that really resonate with young women.”
Mock told Poynter that transgender women are often excluded from spaces like mainstream publications and are often expected to prove their womenhood to be accepted.
She said: “So to have a magazine say ‘No, we know that girls and women come from various walks of life, and you’re just on one path, but that doesn’t negate from the experience of what a woman is or who a woman is, I find that to be revolutionary.”
Transgender activist, actor, and Mock’s friend Laverne Cox tweeted her support of Mock, saying: “Congratulations my dear sister @janetmock on your new job at @marieclaire #awesome #girlslikeus #DoingIt! #Werk!”
Mock is known as a transgender activist, journalist, and author.
Her book Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More is a New York Times Best Seller.
