Super Bowl Legend who said gay marriage would cause ‘anarchy’: I would support any gay player on my team
A former NFL player and Giants’ director of player development David Tyree, has said he would “absolutely support any player who identified as gay, in any way I could.”
He now says he would support any player on his team, telling TheMMQB that: “I would absolutely support any player on the Giants who identified as gay, in any way I could,” Tyree said. “And I will continue to stay in touch with Wade to ensure I am aware of the right ways to do that.”
Newly out former NFL player Wade Davis said Tyree had assured him that he would support any gay player at the Giants.
David Tyree is well known for his “helmet catch” at Super Bowl XLII.
As well as saying same-sex marriage would lead to “anarchy”, he also said he would give up that Super Bowl, and the famous catch, to prevent same-sex marriage.
He has not openly changed his stance on same-sex marriage, but has acknowledged that he will accept all gay players, as a requirement of his job.
Earlier this week, former Colts coach Tony Dungy said he wouldn’t have signed Sam, because he “wouldn’t want to deal with all of it”.
