Alex Salmond: Scotland will not tolerate discrimination, we celebrate diversity
Following calls to speak out in support of the LGBT community at the Commonwealth Games, Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has sent a strong message against discrimination.
Noting that there are still 42 Commonwealth nations where being gay can lead to a prison sentence, human rights campaign group the Peter Tatchell foundation last week pushed Mr Salmond to condemn anti-gay laws.
Speaking to Kaleidoscot in an exclusive interview, the First Minister said: “We as a nation will not tolerate discrimination. We as a nation celebrate diversity.”

Peter Tatchell praised Mr Salmond for the statement, saying: “Whatever people think about Alex Salmond and the push for Scottish independence, his statement is the most forthright and supportive on LGBTI equality by any leader of any nation hosting a major international sporting event.”
Tweeting a picture of the flag flying, he said: “Good to see the rainbow flag above St Andrews House – will fly throughout @Glasgow2014 as we celebrate diversity”.
