Supreme Court Justice: Court will rule on same-sex marriage by 2016 or sooner
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg has said that she expects her court to rule on the issue of same-sex marriage by 2016 at latest.
The justice made the comments in an interview with the Associated Press, dismissing the idea that the court would refuse to rule on the issue.
She said: “think the court will not do what they did in the old days when they continually ducked the issue of miscegenation,” Ginsburg said. “If a case is properly before the court, they will take it.”
She added that the she expects the decision to be made to bring marriage equality everywhere by June 2016, or up to a year earlier.
The private wedding between the Kennedy Center President Michael Kaiser and the economist John Roberts took place at the Washington DC Performing Arts Center.
Mrs Ginsburg said prior to the ceremony: “I think it will be one more statement that people who love each other and want to live together should be able to enjoy the blessings and the strife in the marriage relationship.
She added: “It won’t be long before there will be another” ceremony performed by a justice, and has since performed another wedding.
