US: ACLU files brief asking Wisconsin federal court to rule in favour of marriage equality
The American Civil Liberties Union submitted a brief on Monday, asking a Wisconsin federal appeals court to rule in favour of a lower court ruling that struck down the state’s same-sex marriage ban.
The brief states Wisconsin’s current marriage ban is in violation of the US Constiution and harms same-sex couples who are unable to marry while it is in place.
The brief says: “All Plaintiffs suffer the ongoing harm and indignity of the State’s denigration of their relationships and families.
“By withholding from them the respect, recognition, and support that only marriage confers, Wisconsin stigmatizes these couples and their families as unworthy of the opportunity to express and legally embody their commitment in the most profound way that society provides.
“Wisconsin inflicts these harms for no reason other than these couples’ sexual orientation and sex.”
Wisonsin’s marriage ban was struck down on 7 June.
Marriages in the state have been halted since a judge put a stop to same-sex weddings on 14 June.
