Watch: George Takei remembers the atomic bombing of Hiroshima
Activist and actor George Takei released a video commemorating the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
Today marks the 69th anniversary of the bombing, where tens of thousands were killed in the atomic attack conducted by the United States toward the end of World War II.
The Japanese-American actor was 8-years-old and imprisoned in a California internment camp at the time of the bombing.
He lost relatives in the attack, stating in the video that his aunt and grandmother’s houses were within the destruction area of the bomb.
The video is part of the web series Takei’s Take, where the actor explores technology and trends across the globe. Takei calls the bombing “man’s worst use of technology.”
In the video, Takei and his husband Brad Altman visit the city, reflecting on the bombing and talking of Hiroshima’s push for peace since August 6, 1945.
Takei says of his visits to Hiroshima: “It’s always compelling, haunting, beautiful, and unspeakably sad. It is also a place fervently committed to peace.”
In June, Takei said he hopes gay rights will become a more dominant part of society in Japan.
