US: Equality supporters ask officials to drop defense of Wyoming’s marriage ban

Marriage equality supporters in Wyoming have delivered more than 2,300 signatures asking the governor and attorney general to stop their defense of the state’s same-sex marriage ban.

Wyoming Equality delivered the signatures Tuesday to the governor’s office.

According to Wyoming News, Governor Matt Mead told the supporters that he would continue to support the same-sex marriage ban.

Jeran Artery, executive director of Wyoming Equality, told Wyoming News that the signatures were mostly collected over online petitions.

He said out-of-state residents signed on in solidarity, but only Wyoming residents were counted as part of the 2,300 signatures.

The Wyoming House of Representatives voted down a bill which would have allowed same-sex marriage in the state in February.

Wyoming falls under the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, which has two cases in Utah and Oklahoma pending before the US Supreme Court.

Last month, a Wyoming judge declined to rule on the constitutionality of the state’s same-sex marriage ban, stating he would wait for a US Supreme Court ruling.
