Actor Robin Williams dies age 63
Robin Williams – who played a gay character in cult classic The Birdcage – has been found dead in his home.
The actor was found dead today in his home in Marin County, California, following an apparent suicide.
His spokeswoman, Mara Buxbaum, said: “Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”
A statement from police said: “At this time, the Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made.”
Williams starred as Armand Goldman in 1996 comedy classic The Birdcage, in which Williams’ character attempts to hide his sexuality from his in-laws.
He won an Oscar for his role in Good Will Hunting, and was also famous for his roles in Dead Poets Society and Good Morning Vietnam.
One of his last roles was as a gay character struggling to come to terms with his sexuality in the film Boulevard, which screened last month at the Outfest Film Festival in Los Angeles.
His wife Susan Schneider added: “On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”
