Photos: AIDS Memorial Quilt on display in New York City
A portion of the AIDS Memorial Quilt is in New York City for a two-day public display.
The portion of the quilt, which is composed of 260 12-foot-by-12 foot sections, honors over 5,000 individuals who died from HIV and AIDS.
The quilt was brought to the city by The Foundation for AIDS Research as part of their annual charity motorcycle ride that raises funds and awareness for the organisation.
The AIDS Memorial Quilt was started in June of 1987. Today, the full quilt memorialises more than 48,000 individuals who have died of AIDS.
The quilt has not been displayed in its entirety since 1996 in Washington, D.C.
The display is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Governor’s Island. Today is the last day the quilt will be on display.
