US: Wisconsin Republican who backs Uganda’s anti-gay law wins primary
A Wisconsin Republican who supports Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act has won a primary, securing the party’s nomination to the House of Representatives.
Republican Glenn Grothman, who currently sits in the state Senate, claimed in April that God would be upset that Secretary of State John Kerry is trying to stop Uganda’s anti-gay law.
He said: “What we have is the Secretary of State going to Africa and educating Ugandans or saying he is going to send American scientists to Uganda to explain how normal homosexuality is.
“Think about that. I mean, what must God think of our country?
“Rather than sending people to Uganda to explain better agricultural techniques, we send scientists to Africa to say how wonderful the homosexual lifestyle is.”
Running for Congress in Wisconsin’s 6th district, Grothman managed a shock victory in yesterday’s Republican primary, besting candidates Duey Stroebel and Joe Leibham to secure the nomination.
Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate told Fox: “Wisconsin already sent one right-wing laughingstock to Washington D.C. in Ron Johnson, we don’t need another who literally said he would like to turn back the clock to the 1950s.
“The people of Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional district deserve better than a representative in Congress who makes Michele Bachman and Todd Akin look like reasonable moderates.”
Grothman will face off in November against Democrat Mike Harris, but the district has elected Republican Representatives at every ballot since 1967.
