A teacher who came out as gay in an assembly has received a thank you letter from a student four years later.

David Weston, formerly a teacher at Watford Grammar, came out as gay in an assembly given to the whole school in 2010.

The former pupil wrote: ā€œYou probably wonā€™t remember me ā€¦ I just wanted you to know how inspirational your assembly was.ā€

Continuing, the student says they are straight, but that they are strongly against homophobia.

ā€œI really felt you should know that you challenged the ignorance of so many people that day, and if every teacher shared your courage, then the world would be a much better place ā€“ not just for gay men, but for all of us. For that, I thank you.

ā€œI will carry the memory with me for the rest of my life. Thank you.ā€
