US: Musical about lesbian sexual awakening to open on Broadway
A new musical based on a graphic novel by lesbian author Alison Bechdel will get its Broadway debut in time for next year’s Tony Awards.
‘Fun Home’ tells the story of how Bechdel learns of her sexual identity and recognises her father, who committed suicide when she was in college, was also gay.
In the production Bechdel narrates the musical as she drafts her novel and looks back on her life. Three actresses depict Bechdel as a child, at college age, and as an adult.
Premiering at the Public theatre in New York City last October, ‘Fun Home’ was well received by critics and was honoured with best musical awards by several US theatre groups, including the New York Drama Critics’ Circle.
It was also a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in drama.
‘Fun Home’ has music by Jeanine Tesori and a book and lyrics by Lisa Kron. It will open on Broadway in April 2015 at Circle in the Square Theater, the cast has yet to be announced.
