American Bar Association votes unanimously in favour of LGBT discrimination protections
The American Bar Association (ABA) has voted unanimously to support laws banning discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
Earlier this week the ABA’s House of Delegates voted to endorse such discrimiation protections.
The organisation said LGBT people “have a right to be free from discrimination, threats and violence”, and slammed any “laws, regulations and rules or practices that discriminate” against LGBT people.
Urging “equal protection under the law for all LGBT people”, the resolution urges the repeal of any discriminatory laws already in place.
As well as removing the laws, the resolution urges the US Government to “work to end discrimination against LGBT people”.
The ABA sets ethical codes for the legal profession, academic standards for law schools, and has around 410,000 members.
