US: Arizona gay couple ask judge to recognise marriage over terminal illness
A gay couple in the US state of Arizona has asked a federal judge to instruct the state to recognise their marriage, because one of them is terminally ill.
George Martinez and Fred McQuire have requested that the judge instruct Arizona to recognise their marriage in order for McQuire to be recognised as Martinez’s survivor when he dies.
The ruling would allow McQuire to take care of his affairs and allow him to collect Veterens Affairs benefits.
The couple married in California last month after Martinez was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
They were together for 45 years.
