Daniel Radcliffe: If people think you’re gay, your career is doing well
Daniel Radcliffe has joked that interest in his sexuality shows that his career is still doing well.
The Harry Potter actor was speaking to The Guardian about Google’s suggested searches for his name.
He said: “Daniel Radcliffe alcoholic. Daniel Radcliffe gay. Daniel Radcliffe girlfriend.”
“I’m pleased my girlfriend [now] comes up before alcoholic or gay.
“When I first did that, I got really annoyed for about half a minute, until I tried a few other people’s names and I found out [gay] comes up after almost everyone if they’re a man, and even some women – Florence Welch had it, and I was like, really?
“If people are speculating about your sexuality, then you’re doing OK [laughs].”
He added: “There’s a line in The Thick Of It – Googling yourself is like opening the door to a room full of people telling you how shit you are – and it’s exactly that.
“I first did it in my late teens and it was such a destructive thing for me to do.”
The star, who is currently promoting film What If, last week joked that he “can’t get enough” of going nude on film.
He said: “I did the play where I got naked [Equus] when I was 17, once you do that you don’t really care.
“It immunes you to any inhibitions. Again, not something I seek out but never something I’m going to shy away from.”
Radcliffe also leapt to the support of out NFL star Michael Sam, saying: “My favorite comments online were the ones that said, ‘I don’t mind him being gay, but I don’t want to see him kiss his boyfriend’.
“Well, you kinda do mind, then.
“I presume Michael Sam told the world he was gay so that when he was drafted he could do that without having to fucking think about it or hide it. And I think that’s a fantastic thing.”
