UKIP leader Nigel Farage reveals ‘private dinner’ with Sir Elton John
Sir Elton John has played down rumours that he will back UKIP, after Nigel Farage revealed that he had a private dinner with the star.
Farage told Fubar Radio yesterday: “I was invited by Elton John and David Furnish to their house for a dinner which was held, all six or seven weeks ago.
“It was a private dinner but, yeah, we talked about politics and current affairs and all of these things and, yes, actually the press reports were right: I got on very well with Elton John indeed.
“Maybe I’ve got a big announcement to make, you never know!”
However, a spokesperson for the veteran singer claimed that inviting Farage for dinner did not mean Sir Elton would support UKIP, saying: “Elton will not be favouring any party.”
Farage said of Sir Elton: “I’ll tell you what he does understand: as a guy that comes from an ordinary background that the gap in society today between rich and poor is getting wider and wider and wider and that lots of working class lads with his sort of background are not being given the chance these days to achieve their best. He certainly understands that.
“I think that, you know, the guy makes music, the guy sings, he’s brilliantly successful. All I would say is he’s no idiot. He knows what’s going on in the world.”
The legendary singer in June waded into the Church of England’s current crisis over gay clergy marrying, claiming Jesus would have supported gay rights.
