US: Sting and Patti LuPone to perform at global LGBT equality benefit
Sting and Patti LuPone will perform at Uprising of Love: A Benefit Concert for Global Equality at New York City’s Gershwin Theatre on 15 September.
Noteable composer Stephen Schwartz and out producer Bruce Cohen are executive producers of the concert, which will raise money to benefit LGBT individuals living under anti-gay laws globally.
Uprising of Love, a campaign created by Cohen, Dustin Lance Black, Melissa Etheridge, Greg Propper and Linda Wallem, was launched before the Sochi Winter Olympics as a response to Russia’s anti-gay laws.
The campaign has shifted focus from that specific cause to a larger goal of raising awareness and increasing support for activists on the ground in parts of the globe where LGBT people are threatened.
The site says of the benefit: “We join together to remind global leaders that that LGBTI people around the world are facing harassment, abuse, and violence, and to raise significant funding for grassroots organizations and activists around the world.”
The proceeds from the benefit will go to Fueling the Frontlines, a campaign for global LGBT rights led by the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice.
Additional performers and guests will be announced in the coming weeks.
