Spanish senator: Economic crisis caused by ‘favours’ for gays
A Spanish senator has defended her comments, after claiming that the country’s economic crisis was caused by subsidies for gays.
Senator Luz Elena Sanín, of the ruling Populist Party, said that the country’s economic problems were caused by “subsidies for NGOs and homosexuals”.
The MP, who represents Ceuta in the Senate, blamed former Socialist PM Jose Luis Zapatero, for giving “favours” to gays.
Socialist MP Patricia Hernández said: “Blaming NGOs and LGBT groups for the government’s public debt is shameful.
“It’s absurd and ludicrous. All it does is denote the PP senator’s homophobia, this is what she thinks the socialists’ financial inheritance is.”
An MP from her own party, Francisco Márquez, also condemned the comments, saying: “I don’t agree at all that Zapatero’s feeble economic management was caused by subsidies offered to gay, lesbian and transsexual groups.
“They’re organizations that work for just and legitimate causes and receive subsidies based on current legislation.”
Sanín – who has since claimed that her comments were taken out of context.
