US: Supreme Court stays same-sex marriages in Virginia
The Supreme Court has issued an order to stop same-sex marriages in Virginia, which were planned to start Thursday morning.
The Wednesday ruling came in response to an application filed with Chief Justice John Roberts, which Roberts then referred to the whole court.
The stay puts a lower court ruling that struck down the ban on hold until the Supreme Court decides whether or not to hear an appeal.
A US federal judge overturned the state’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage in February.
A Virginia federal appeals court also struck down the state’s same-sex marriage ban in July.
