Totnes to get own rainbow crossing for Pride
The rural Devon town of Totnes is to get its very own rainbow crossing, to celebrate next month’s Pride festival.
The special rainbow crossings have become a popular part of recent Pride celebrations, with crossings unveiled in both Brighton and London earlier this year.
However, the planned temporary liquid chalk crossing – which will be unveiled in Totnes next to the Church Square on September 1 – will be a first for a rural community.
Totnes Pride said: “We have been inspired to create our own rainbow crossing by cities like London and Brighton who have created their own temporary rainbow crossings during the week of their pride events.
“It will be the first of its kind for a rural town.”
To create the crossing, Totnes Pride has teamed up with local artist Karen Abadie, who will lead a group of volunteers.
A crowdfunding campaign has also been launched, to pay for the materials that are used.
Councillor Robert Vint said “I am currently involved with plans for several real zebra crossings around the town and am delighted to also lend my support to this symbolic crossing to promote equality. Both projects, in their own ways, should help make the town a safer, friendlier and more inclusive place for all.”
Mat Price of Proud2Be said: “We are thrilled with the support we have received from the local community. For us Totnes Pride is not only a chance to celebrate diversity in our town but to also acknowledge how far we have come as a community in our fight for equality and how much there is still left to achieve.”
Totnes Pride will take place on September 6, with a parade through the town kicking off around 10am.
