Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie marry despite gay marriage pledge
Despite previously pledging to wait until all couples in the US, gay or straight, could marry, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have tied the knot.
The couple had previously said they would abstain from getting married until every couple across America could do so, but two years ago announced they did not think they could wait.
In January 2012, Pitt first hinted that he did not know whether they would be able to go the distance on the promise, and in April that year the couple announced they were engaged.
The couple married in Correns, France on Saturday, a spokesman for the couple confirmed, before returning to Malta, to begin work on film ‘By the Sea’.
Jolie walked down the aisle with eldest sons Maddox and Pax, while Zahara and Vivienne threw flower petals.
Pitt previously said: “We’d actually like to, and it seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out.
“It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment.”
‘By the Sea’ features Jolie as director, and the first since ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’, that the couple have appeared opposite each other.
Same-sex marriage was legalised in France last year following strong demonstrations both for and against it.
Gay and lesbian couples can currently marry in nineteen US states and the District of Columbia.
