US: Detroit couple claims their mail carrier won’t deliver mail because they are gay
A Detroit same-sex couple believes they aren’t receiving mail because their mail carrier learned they are gay.
James Lawson and Theodore Washington are the only people living Prevost Street, which was previously a place where trash, stripped cars and old tires were dumped.
The couple sought help from the mayor’s office to clean the street, but still aren’t receiving mail even after the clean-up was completed.
Instead, they received a notice that their mail delivery has been suspended indefinitely.
Lawson, who has been diagnosed with cancer, said to Fox 2 that he is not receiving mailed medications and doctor’s notices because of the termination of service.
The notice states that the mail carrier cannot get to the home through his regular route because tires, which the couple uses to detract illegal dumpers, are blocking one entrance of the street.
There is another entrance to the street that the couple says doctors, nurses and garbage trucks use.
Lawson told Fox 2 News: “[The mailman] has made comments to the neighbor about ‘the faggots can go get their mail from the post office.'”
The two say other streets in the city are much worse than their street, leading them to believe the reason for their lack of mail is their carrier’s discrimination.
The postal service is launching an investigation into the allegations, Fox 2 News reports, saying any anti-gay behavior, if occurring, “will not be tolerated.”
