Alan Cumming: The campaign for Scottish independence is just like the battle for LGBT equality
Hollywood actor Alan Cumming has spoken in favour of Scottish independence, saying the ‘Yes’ campaign’s fight is similar to the battle for LGBT equality.
Speaking to GT (Gay Times), in the magazine’s latest issue, Cumming states why he strongly supports, and will vote for an independent Scotland, saying the referendum is an issue of equality.
He says: “I think with the Yes campaign, if you were to take away the word Scotland and LGBT it would be very similar to any equal rights campaign. We want to have a voice, we want to have rights that are equal to everyone else, we want to be part of the social plan. It’s about optimism and inclusion, and about nobody being left behind. That’s what the Yes campaign is about.
“It’s absolutely an equality issue. It’s a very similar thing. Equality for the Scottish people who, how, don’t have equality. They’re ruled by a government they didn’t vote for – that’s not equality.
“The LGBT population have had a very similar fight to the one that I’m now in: To be allowed to define our own destiny.”
Retaining his British citizenship, and property in Scotland, Cumming became a naturalised US citizen in November 2008.
The 49-year-old Perthshire-born bisexual star is famous for his roles in X Men, The Good Wife, and his hit Broadway version of Macbeth.
