Former Utah Governor: Equal marriage in 50 states is ‘inevitable’
A former Governor of Utah has claimed that same-sex marriage across all 50 states is “inevitable”.
Jon Huntsman Jr, who was the Republican Governor of Utah between 2005 to 2009 and ran for President in 2012, made the comments to Salt Lake City newspaper Deseret News.
He said: “I think that’s inevitable. I think we’re on a pathway.
“[I’ve] already spoken out why I think it’s the right thing to do to recognize same-sex marriage.
“But these things don’t happen overnight. It’s step-by-step and it’s an evolution that, in this case, is taking us somewhere.
“That’s not to say at the interim you’re not going to have court cases and pretty heated debates. I think that’s just a given.”
The current governor of Utah, Gary Herbert, claimed in May that elected officials refusing to defend same-sex marriage bans is equivalent to “anarchy”.
He said: “For elected officials, governors or attorney generals, to pick and choose what laws [they] will enforce I think is a tragedy, and is the next step to anarchy.
“We have an obligation as a state to defend those laws.”
Earlier today, a judge in Louisiana upheld the state’s same-sex marriage ban, shattering the winning streak of equality activists by finding against their case to throw out the state’s Amendment 1 marriage ban.
The Reagan-appointed Judge Martin Feldman claimed that same-sex marriage supporters had failed to prove that the ban violates the Constitution.
