US: Michael Sam signed to Dallas Cowboys
Out NFL player Michael Sam has been signed to the practice team of the Dallas Cowboys.
Sam, who made history in May as the first out player to be drafted by an NFL team, was let go by the St Louis Rams on Saturday, as they reduced their roster from 75 to 53 players.
The Texas-based Dallas Cowboys confirmed today that they have signed him to their 10-man practice team, it has been confirmed.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said: “We have had nothing but good reports about him from our people and people in St. Louis.
“We just want to give him a chance to come in and see if he can help our football team.
“He was a very good player in college. His track record speaks for itself.”
Sam added: “I’m excited to be a Cowboy, it’s great to be heading home.
“It has all happened so quickly, but it’s exciting, I just wanna get back to playing football you know.
“I never followed the Cowboys growing up because I never had a team. I am a fan of defenses and Dallas need some help, that’s why I’m going.
“I’m excited to be to be joining Dallas, I just want to play football, it’s great to be heading back to my home state. It’s been a roller coaster this past week but I’m happy where I’m at now.”
Though he will not be on the main team’s roster, being on the practice team gives Sam the opportunity to train and possibly graduate to the main roster.
The 24-year-old player had performed well in recent preseason matches, but was released by the Rams in the team’s final round of cuts, with the final spot in the team’s defensive lineup taken by fellow rookie Ethan Westbrooks.
