First same-sex couple marry in Dagenham
A same-sex couple have become the first to marry in Barking and Dagenham.
Emma Barber and Angie Craig, who both work in schools in Havering, married at Dagenham Registry Office last week.
Superintendent Cheryl Davis, who oversaw the ceremony, revealed to the Barking and Dagenham Post that it was the first same-sex wedding ceremony in the area.
Ms Davis said: “It gives me immense pleasure to conduct our very first same-sex marriage in this borough.
“It’s a great privilege to be part of this couple’s special day.”
The couple, who have children from previous relationships, said the ceremony was “flawless”.
Angie Barber-Craig said: “We’re excited. It’s quite a privilege.
“In the beginning, we didn’t hold hands in public, we used to get silly looks.
“It’s gotten better in the last five years. The law made a big difference.”
Council leader Darren Rodwell told the newspaper: “Marriage is a very special occasion and I am delighted Angie and Emma chose to celebrate their momentous day in Barking and Dagenham.
“As a council that values diversity and equal rights for all couples, this is a historic day.
“We’re sure the happy couple will remember this occasion for the rest of their lives and we wish them all the best for the future.”
