God Loves Gays billboard unveiled in ‘God Hates Fags’ church’s hometown
A ‘God Loves Gays’ billboard has been unveiled in the hometown of the notoriously anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church, after a crowdfunding campaign.
Creators of a popular spoof ‘God’ Facebook page raised $86,980 (£53,897) in donations last month, to advertise its message of love and inclusiveness in Topeka, Kansas, where the homophobic church is based.
The first of the billboards has now gone up, just down the road from the hate group’s headquarters.
The billboard, which will remain in place until at least March 2015, has been well received by many of the Topeka locals, with the notable exception of the church members.
Spokesperson Shirley Phelps-Roper said: “Thank God for that lying billboard! Every soul that sees it will either rejoice for the lie and the vain hope of afflicting the servants of God at WBC.”
“When they stand before God in the judgment, it will be TOO LATE for repentance, and eternal torment will follow.”
God responded: “The WBC says they will protest the God Loves Gays billboard. That’s okay, whatever keeps them too busy to protest at funerals.
“I don’t judge people based on colour, race, religion, sexuality, or gender…I judge people on whether or not they’re an asshole.”
God also hopes to unveil bus adverts in the town in the near future.
As the campaign exceeded its fundraising goal, some of the money will go to charity, with $10,000 donated to The Trevor Project, which helps suicidal LGBT youth, and $10,000 for the National Alliance to End Homelessness.
Last year, an equality house was opened opposite the homophobic church, painted in rainbow colours.
