Russian gays may be given alternative to national service
A committee of the Russian State Duma is to consider whether gay men should be allowed the option of alternative civilian service, rather than national service.
The Defence Committee will consider whether to amend the federal law on alternative civilian service, which is currently only available to conscientious objectors and members of small indigenous ethnic groups.
According to RAPSI, committee member Igor Zotov said the amendment was intended to “make life easier” for gay people.
The drafting of a bill to change the law will be discussed at the next meeting of the committee.
Conscripts in Russia serve twelve months, but alternative civilian service lasts for 21 months, or 18 months at military organisations.
Other than military placements, those who opt for the alternative service are offered at a list of organisations approved by the Healthcare and Social Development Ministry.
