Orange is the New Black writer files for divorce from husband, after coming out as lesbian
Orange is the New Black writer Lauren Morelli is divorcing her husband, after coming out as a lesbian.
The Netflix show follows main character Piper, sent to prison on an old drugs charge after getting engaged to boyfriend Larry, only to rekindle an affair with former girlfriend Alex.
Morelli, who began writing for the show in its first season, opened up about the “terrifying” symmetry between Piper’s journey and her own in May.
She said: “As we started to shape our characters and debate fictional Piper’s ‘true’ sexuality that first season, we engaged in long discussions about sex, gender and our own experiences.
“I was finally forced to consider a question that had never, ever occurred to me before: Holy shit, am I gay?
“While it certainly would have been disorienting to begin to question my sexuality after three decades of knowing myself, it was particularly blinding because I’d gotten married only a few months before.”
According to TMZ, this week Morelli filed papers to divorce husband Steve Basilone, though the split is reportedly amicable.
She has since been linked to actress Samira Wiley, who plays Poussey on the show, after they attended the Emmys together.
Actress Uzo Aduba recently picked up a Best Supporting Actress Emmy for her role as lesbian character Suzanne Warren, known as Crazy Eyes, on the series.
She beat out transgender co-star Laverne Cox to take home the award.
