Stephen Gilbert MP rips into ‘gays will destroy society’ columnist
Out Lib Dem MP Stephen Gilbert has rebuked a Devon newspaper columnist who claimed gays will cause the collapse of civilisation.
In the column, he claimed that homosexuality is an “aberration”, and that it is “worth recalling” that homosexuality used to be criminalised.
The gay MP, who represents the constituency of St Austell and Newquay in neighbouring Cornwall, has condemned the comments.
He told PinkNews: “It has never been love whether it’s between a man and a woman or between two men or between two women that has endangered civilisation.
“But prejudice, ignorance and fear will always lead to mortal danger and I’m afraid that this columnist clearly has a surplus of all three.
“There will be people reading his Byzantine views that will be scared to tell their family, friends and colleagues who they are. It’s people with views like his that make our communities less safe.”
His comments follow those of North Devon MP Sir Nick Harvey, who said earlier today: “We can’t stop people from having these sorts of views, but they ought to be brave enough to put their name to it.”
