Norwich City FC launches probe into homophobic abuse at match
Norwich City Football Club has launched a probe into allegations of homophobic abuse at the team’s match against Birmingham City on Saturday.
The alleged incident occured between two Norwich fans at the club’s Carrow Road stadium.
The club said in a statement: “We are investigating an allegation of homophobic abuse by a home supporter at half-time during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Birmingham City at Carrow Road.
“Another City fan has made a complaint to Kick It Out and the Club using our Safeguarding reporting hotline, set up to enable fans to report any incidents of discriminatory, abusive or otherwise unacceptable behaviour they witness during matches.
“Fans are reminded the Club has a zero-tolerance stance on all forms of discrimination and anyone found guilty of discrimination will be banned from Carrow Road.”
A spokesperson for Norfolk Police told EDP24: “We are aware of allegations of homophobic abuse at the Norwich match against Birmingham City at Carrow Road on Saturday. However, we have not received any formal complaint.”
The incident comes just two weeks after the club backed the Rainbow Laces campaign, designed to confront homophobia in the sport.
The club said at the time: “Norwich City will be joining other clubs in the Premier League and Football League in supporting the campaign this year as part of our on-going commitment to eradicating all forms of discrimination from the game.”
