Police investigate shouts of ‘go home fag’ at gay couple’s wedding
Police are investigating homophobic slurs shouted during a gay couple’s wedding in Coronado.
Oscar De Las Salas and Gary Jackson took to their wedding ceremony in Coronado, but were frustrated after they heard the shouts of “go home homos”, and “go home fags”.
They said at first they feared that someone might have been there with a gun, but that later on it was more frustrating, as the slurs continued, but they were unable to see who was shouting.
Police have now filled out a report, and have said they need to determine whether the shouts constitute free speech or a hate crime.
De Las Salas said he wants to expose the person who shouted the slurs.
The couple’s wedding took place in Coronado’s Centennial Park on 17 August at sunset, and 30 guests, including an Arizona congresswoman, flew in for the ceremony.
The couple say the slurs linger on in their memories.
“It’s just sad that that is now ingrained for the rest of our lives in our wedding day,” said Jackson. “That person took a chunk of what should have been a beautiful day and turned it into something nasty and full of hate.”
De Las Salas said: “He took from me, my husband, and my guests a moment of joy, a simple moment of joy.”
