Watch: US-wide equal marriage ad launched ahead of Supreme Court meeting
A new TV advert pushing for marriage equality in all 50 states is set to air across the US this week.
The ad, produced by Freedom to Marry, launches ahead of a closed-doors Supreme Court meeting next Monday (September 29), in which justices will consider taking up one of several pending marriage ban cases.
The justices will review appeals of rulings striking down marriage bans in Indiana, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia, and will consider taking up a case,
The ad states: “One nation, indivisible – except if you’re gay.
“In 19 states, gay couples and their children share in the protections that only the freedom to marry provides. In the others, they are banned from marrying.
“They’re taxed unfairly, denied Social Security and parenting rights, and can lose a family home when their loved one dies.
“Every day of denial means real harms to real families. It’s time to end marriage discrimination.”
Freedom to Marry president Evan Wolfson said: “The ad underscores the human costs of prolonging marriage discrimination.
“Every day of denial is a day of real and needless injury, indignity, and injustice for too many families across the country – and time matters.
“America is ready for the freedom to marry, 40 lower court rulings have affirmed the freedom to marry, even opponents are saying it’s time to bring the country to national resolution – and it is, indeed, time.”
It features several real-life couples, including military veterans Bob Collier and Chuck Hunziker, who are fighting for marriage equality in Florida after 51 years together, and Jamie Cunningham and Courtney Seals, who are raising a daughter in Tennessee.
