Watch: Here’s what David Cameron has to say about gays making out in public
Prime Minister David Cameron agreed that it is sweet to see gay couples kissing in public.
The Tory leader made the comments while being grilled on a number of hypothetical scenarios by out Newsnight host Evan Davis, who is in a civil partnership.
The broadcaster asked him: “You’re in a public park, and two men – recently married – are kissing each other. Is that sweet, or is that mildly inappropriate?”
Mr Cameron replied: “No, that’s fine! I’ve been very clear about this.
“I believe in traditional and modern values, I believe in the family, I believe in marriage. I think it’s such a great institution, I think men should be able to marry each other and women should be able to marry each other.
“If I can kiss my wife in public, I don’t see why you can’t kiss your husband in public.”
Mr Cameron last month said he wanted to see more same-sex couples adopt children.
He said: “When there are children in need of a loving family, and gay couples with so much love to give, we should not allow prejudice to stand in the way of progress for our children or for our wider society.
“That sends a powerful message about who we are as a country in the modern world.”
He added: “And to anyone who has reservations, I say this: Yes, it’s about equality, but it’s also about something else: commitment. Conservatives believe in the ties that bind us; that society is stronger when we make vows to each other and support each other.
“So I don’t support gay marriage in spite of being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I am a Conservative.”
Evan Davis was announced as a replacement for Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight in June.
