Joan Rivers wanted Michelle Obama to appear on RuPaul’s Drag Race
In an interview conducted just days before her death, Joan Rivers spoke of her plans for the future and joked that Michelle Obama should appear on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
GT (Gay Times) was one of the final publications to speak with the star and has named her among 30 ‘gay icons’.
True to form, Rivers remained unrepentant over this summer’s jibe at the First Lady.
“Oh come on!” she retorted to GT’s Benjamin Butterworth, “All I’m saying is she’s got a great body, very masculine arms, very tall, wears wigs. She could easily go on RuPaul’s show!
“My comments are never made to be nasty. They’re made to be funny and make people laugh at situations. That’s what a comedian’s job is!”
Speaking of her plans for the future, the self-confessed workaholic added: “I want to go back to Broadway, I want to do another late night show.
“Social media is so great, I already have my own YouTube show called In Bed With Joan and we’re now doing drunken lovely phone calls on it! It’s just crazy.
“There’s so much more to come. Oh, and we’re doing another book I write and I laugh.”
The interview touched heavily on Rivers’ mortality.
“Oh doll, I wanna go out on stage”, she said. “You never hear about people, then they die and you hear all about them. Meanwhile they haven’t worked for 12 years.
“If there was a health issue that would stop me, I’d kill myself. I will not sit around and drool in a diaper. That’s not the way I want people to remember me.”
Rivers had previously spoken of wanting a huge “Hollywood” funeral, “with Meryl Streep crying, in five different accents.” But when asked about her comments, she simply said: “After you’re gone, you’re gone. You’ll be one day in the paper, I really don’t care.”
Rivers appeared to get her eternal wish of a Hollywood funeral, with stars including Sarah Jessica Parker, Whoopi Goldberg, Donald Trump and Diane Sawyer, attending the comedian’s final send off in New York City last month.
President Barack Obama also expressed his condolences to Rivers’ family, despite the comedian’s lampooning of the First Lady.
